Would like to discuss this question with the help of small incident which happened.

Those were my college days, myself and my friend traveled Chennai city to purchase a computer which we wanted to assemble ourselves. Super excited to be at Computer market in super busy place called Ritchie street in Chintadripet. This place is most known for electronic goods.

Myself and my friend reached early finished the computer purchase booked it to be delivered and planning to go to T.Nagar. We went to Chintadripet excited to have our first journey on MRTS. The ticket vendor told you need to change the train at Egmore station using chennai suburban railways. We started towards egmore boarded the train first time at MRTS. Ticket was taken till Mambalam station.

We changed the train in Egmore in a hurry, we boarded the 1st class compartment which was empty. We felt good that we are travelling freely and comfortably. Suddenly a ticket checker came and we were caught. He asked whether we have 1st class ticket, obviously we didn’t.

He took us till saidapet railway police station as we had second class ticket and we were travelling on First class compartment and finally we ended up paying the fine then returned back to mambalam.

If I look back at this incident, following are the key takeaways:

  • We cannot claim ignorance of law
  • Don’t be in a hurry (Realized boarded the wrong compartment after sometime only, didn’t check)
  • Not all things lucrative are safe (Boarded as it was cool, free with fan :))
  • Don’t take things for granted (Thought no body would bother and check)
  • Be cognizant of the information you have in your hand (Ticket, Platform, Labels should have been verified)
  • Be sensitive towards your perceived freedom, risk involved in actions you do (Took things for granted)

Cyber crimes are no exception from the above takeaways. We always need to be cognizant of the context as Information technology has been so pervasive and its become part of our daily lives. Many cyber security threats like Phishing, Computer virus, Exploits are like ticking bomb which are waiting for the attack surface to be exposed.

To summarize the its important to understand and accept this problems. Once we accept these problems and start acting upon it, it would be easier to tackle them effectively to be safe Netizen.

Looking forward to your comments and feedback.
